Obligations as Social Constructs

چکیده
In this paper we formalize sanction-based obligations in the context of Searle’s construction of social reality. In particular, we define obligations using a counts as conditional, Anderson’s reduction to alethic modal logic and Boella and Lesmo’s normative agent. Our analysis presents an alternative criticism to the weakening rule, which has already been criticized in the philosophical literature for its role in the Ross paradox and the Forrester paradox, and the analysis presents a criticism to the generally accepted conjunction rule. Moreover, we show a possible application of these results in a qualitative decision theory. Finally, our analysis also contributes to philosophical discussions such as the distinction between violations and sanctions in Anderson’s reduction, and between implicit and explicit normative systems.

متن کاملOn obligations and normative ability: Towards a logical analysis of the social contract
We develop a logic of normative ability, as an extension to the Alternating-time Temporal Logic (ATL) of Alur, Henzinger, and Kupferman. While conventional ATL contains cooperation modalities of the form 〈〈C〉〉φ, intended to express the fact that coalition C have the capability to bring about φ, in Normative ATL* (NATL*), these expressions are replaced with constructs of the form 〈〈η : C〉〉φ, wit...

The relationship between “rights” and “obligations” is one of an inseparable nature. In the same way that “human rights” are perceived as being distinct from “citizenship rights”, “duties” and “obligations” of individuals as human beings are distinguishable from their obligations as citizens. The present paper presupposes the ties between rights and obligations to apply to any individual and “s...

متن کاملModelling Agent Communication in a First Order Logic
In the design of information systems, the notion of agent has proven useful. When modelling communication among agents, deontic concepts, such as obligations, permissions, and prohibitions are essential. The dynamics of obligations, i.e., how obligations are created and destroyed, can effectively be described by means of notions from speech act theory. In this paper, we present a language that ...
